Compassion moves us beyond the feeling of empathy for one another’s suffering, urging us to act to alleviate their pain. By cultivating kindness and compassion you find yourself, as the Charter for Compassion claims, “dethroning yourself from the center of your world and putting another there, and to honor the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect.” Today the Charter is active in hundreds of communities around the world. It works in over 60 countries to uphold the sanctity of those who suffer in barrios and mega-cities, from courthouse to school house, backing those who fight for just wages, human rights, the environment and dignity in old age. Working in nine sectors: the arts, business, education, environment, faith and spirituality, healthcare, peace, restorative justice, science and research and social services, the Charter recognizes the need to sharpen how we pay attention so that we can strengthen our skills of compassionate action.
